Students at STEM You Can Video Contest Awards Gala

Student participants at the STEM You Can! Video Contest Awards Gala

On April 30th the STEM You Can! Video Contest Awards Gala was held at the Rochester Museum & Science Center.

Eight teams of students from area schools were recognized for outstanding videos highlighting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Students from elementary, middle, and high school all submitted short videos illustrating concepts such as robotics, electricity, and the weight of electricity.

All of the youth who participated were from grades 3 to 12 in the Finger Lakes region. The students worked individually or in teams with two or three other students, plus an adult mentor or adviser, to create three-minute videos that explored STEM topics and their impact in our world today.

Winners in every age category received cash prizes, with first prize in each category taking $500, second place winners brought home $100 and third place pocketed $50. A total of 17 student videos from across the Finger Lakes Region were entered and reviewed by a panel of community and education leaders, including SUNY Brockport alum Glenn Johnson.

“We asked students to create three-minute videos to share their interpretations of what STEM means to them,” said Sara E. Silverstone, Ph.D., Director of the Finger Lakes Regional Hub of the Empire State STEM Learning Network. “This activity helps them, their faculty advisors, and their families and friends appreciate the importance of STEM learning for success in the modern world.”

“Congratulations to all of the winners of the STEM You Can! Video Contest and the Finger Lakes STEM Hub as a whole. This type of community building and youth engagement not only brings together the region but it inspires and supports the next generation of technology, engineering, and science leaders,” said Johanna Duncan-Poitier, SUNY Senior Vice Chancellor for Community Colleges and the Education Pipeline. “SUNY is pleased to support the success of the Finger Lakes region, helped in no small part by the many SUNY schools in the region.”

All of the videos are featured on the Finger Lakes-STEM Hub’s website at http://www.empirestem-fl.org/students/2013-Video-contest-entries. Gala and program sponsors include Time Warner Cable and the Rochester Museum & Science Center (steward of the Finger Lakes STEM Hub).

This is another great example of what is going on across New York thanks to SUNY and the Empire State STEM Learning Network. The Empire State STEM Learning Network is a statewide, community led collaborative advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education to prepare all students across New York State for success in school, work and life. Empire STEM is transforming education through regionally-based STEM communities that can create and implement the most innovative approaches in classrooms, schools and programs. A connected set of regional hubs and partners are beginning to work together more efficiently to identify, test, validate, share and advance promising and innovative STEM teaching and learning programs, practices, policies, platforms and partnerships.
